Coordinating Family Photo Outfit Ideas

This has been one of my most-requested blog posts so I’m so excited to share it with you today! I know that putting together outfits that coordinate but don’t look ridiculously matchy-matchy for photos can be tricky so I rounded up LOTS of different options for coordinated family photo looks and added in some extra options if you have more kids, kids of different ages, etc. I actually had a blast putting this together so I hope it’s helpful for you too! I tried to keep everything very affordable and easy to re-create to match your own wardrobes/styles. You can click each of the images below the photo to shop them!

This roundup is probably the most versatile and showcases my #1 tip when it comes to coordinating groups of outfits: ALL. NEUTRALS. GO. Pressure’s off because YES you can mix black and navy, brown and black, ivory and white, olive and navy, tan and brown- any neutral is perfectly fine to coordinate together! And actually, mixing and matching them creates my favorite type of family photo look as it keeps things from looking overly matchy!

You can also mix some very simple patterns here, like the plaid and the stripe, but I would recommend keeping them in the neutral tones and doing a max of 2 different prints for the whole group. You can’t go wrong with this one, and it would be super easy to re-create with things you may already have in your closet or add in different options that you love!

I know some of you will be on the lookout for a more dressed up, holiday-inspired family photo that you can use for annual Christmas cards. I stuck with a traditional red for this one, but I also think you could create similar looks with hunter green or even all white for a winter-y look! I tried to keep the shades of red fairly similar here and then just pulled some different textures in to make it a little more interesting- faux fur, leather, velvet, wool. Big bonus: these would all make great outfits for a holiday party or Christmas Eve church service. :)

This one is actually my favorite of the bunch because it’s just a little more out-of-the-box than the others and gives each family member an opportunity to showcase their own spunk and style a little more! Again, neutral colors are best here or similar color palettes. Mustard yellow, olive green, rust, and brown work really well together for a fall photo. Don’t be afraid to play with some neutral prints (like the leopard) or even some graphic t’s here!

This is the most match-y that I went, but I think it works for this! So I pulled the one buffalo plaid (which is a super easy print to find anywhere btw) through every outfit in this out. I think the trick here is to make sure you showcase the print in a different item in each outfit. Like instead of making everyone in the family wear a plaid button down shirt, have mom wear a dress, son wear a hat, etc. And have at least one member of the family who showcases the print in a small, subtle way (such as the hat) so that it isn’t overwhelming to the photo if you want to utilize the same print throughout. The print doesn’t have to be exact either- it’s okay if one of the plaids is a little smaller etc.
